Understanding metal levels
How plans split the cost of care
Metal levels describe how a plan shares average costs with you, not the quality of care. A higher level usually means a higher premium and lower costs when you use care.
| Level | Plan pays on average | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Plan pays on averageAbout 60% | Good to knowLowest monthly premiums and the highest costs when you need care. |
| Silver | Plan pays on averageAbout 70% | Good to knowIf your income qualifies, Silver plans can come with extra savings on deductibles and copays (cost-sharing reductions). |
| Gold | Plan pays on averageAbout 80% | Good to knowHigher premiums and lower costs when you get care. |
| Platinum | Plan pays on averageAbout 90% | Good to knowHighest premiums and the lowest costs when you get care. Not offered in every area. |
| Catastrophic | Plan pays on averageNot a metal level | Good to knowLow premiums and very high deductibles. For people under 30 or with a hardship or affordability exemption. Premium tax credits can't be used. |
Premium tax credits
How tax credits lower your premium
A premium tax credit lowers what you pay each month for a Marketplace plan. The amount depends on your household income, your household size and the cost of a benchmark Silver plan where you live.
You can have it paid to your insurer in advance each month or claim it when you file your taxes. If your income ends up different from your estimate, the amount is reconciled on your tax return, so report changes to the Marketplace during the year.
Our quote shows an estimate. The Marketplace makes the official determination when you apply.
